Nisha Patel is an accomplished criminal lawyer with extensive experience defending clients who are facing a wide range of criminal charges. Recognized as a Criminal Law Rising Star in both 2022 and 2023 by Doyle’s Guide, Nisha is dedicated to providing robust legal representation.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (double majoring in Criminology and Philosophy) and a Juris Doctor (postgraduate law degree) from the University of Melbourne, in addition to a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
Currently a Senior Associate at Stary Norton Halphen, Nisha frequently undertakes her own advocacy, appearing in various legal proceedings including pleas, bail applications, contested committals, contested hearings, and intervention order proceedings. She is known for her steadfast commitment to her clients, often managing cases involving serious charges such as family violence, sex offences, drug-related offences, violent crimes, and homicide. Nisha is also highly regarded for her written advocacy, regularly handling applications to Working with Children Check Victoria, Fines Victoria, and the Sex Offenders Register, particularly in matters involving travel applications or the suspension of reporting conditions.
Nisha has a particular interest in cases involving children charged with serious indictable offences, exemplified by her involvement in DPP v PM [2023] VSC 560
Before joining Stary Norton Halphen, Nisha served as a Judge’s Associate at the County Court of Victoria and volunteered with the Fitzroy Legal Service and Flemington & Kensington Community Legal Centre. During her studies, she completed internships with Victoria Legal Aid and the Police Accountability Project run by the Flemington & Kensington Community Legal Centre.
