Stary Norton Halphen is a specialist Criminal Defence Law firm. Lawyer and Support roles at Stary Norton Halphen provide exceptional career experience and the opportunity to further develop the skills of already talented and passionate people.
We regret that we are not able to offer work experience to secondary school students.
We recognise that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. In an effort to breakdown the barriers faced by many in entering the legal profession, Stary Norton Halphen has committed to introducing measures to make the firm and industry more inclusive.
Stary Norton Halphen Lawyers offers law students nearing graduation and law graduates the opportunity to undertake paid work across one of our four offices, located on the Lands of Kulin peoples.
The program is available only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, or people from diverse backgrounds. Applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The program aims to create pathways into the criminal law industry for those that may face boundaries for social, economic and/or cultural reasons.
The internship duration will either be:
4-weeks full time; or
8-weeks part time.
Your daily hours are flexible, depending on educational or personal needs and circumstances. We will make adjustments where possible to suit your circumstances—to encourage and support you in your transition from law student or graduate to lawyer.
During your time at Stary Norton Halphen, you will have exposure to expert practitioners across a broad spectrum of criminal defence law. You will have the opportunity to work on a range of summary and indictable matters, develop your legal research skills, and attend all courts sitting in the criminal law jurisdiction in Victoria—Magistrates’ Courts, Childrens Courts, County and Koori Courts, and the Supreme Court. Our lawyers are in-and-out of court each day, and you will have the opportunity to shadow lawyers in their day-to-day role. You will be supervised by a partner and supported by a mentor.
The legal profession, and particularly criminal defence law, requires diversity and inclusion to increase its capacity to do justice. Diversity strengthens our criminal law practices through drawing on the unique skills and experiences of each individual, and makes the legal system more representative of those for whom it exists—all of us.

Advice from a competent and experienced criminal lawyer before you are interviewed can and often does have a meaningful impact on the outcome of your case and in some instances, is the difference between whether your matter proceeds to court or not.
